Short story: Jackie

I’m Jackie, and my time at the Poverty Truth Community is very special to me, em, because it took away feelings of shame and guilt about being in poverty. It was like a safe space where I could share my own experiences, and learn about those of others. And this made me realise that poverty is not something we should be internalising as if we deserve it, em, because it's all our fault. I remember becoming energised and wanting to shout about the wrongs of poverty whenever and wherever I could and PTC sought out platforms for me to do this. Em, it built my confidence, reinforced my sense of social justice, em, because I suppose sometimes I would doubt my own feelings of social justice, they’re easier to apply to other people but when it's happening to you, you start to feel that guilt and shame. But it reinforced it for me and provided a release from the burden of poverty as well. I can't thank the Poverty Truth Community enough for this experience.
